"A large, loud truck came around frequently and took away all the bags of food people left out for us, and then meals would be scarce for a day or two. I didn’t like that truck, nor the greedy men who hopped off it to scoop up all the food for themselves, despite the fact that they and their truck smelled glorious."

I want to get into doing more 8-bit-style work again, so I’ve been trying out different methods and I’ve finally found a method I really like. I’m practicing by redrawing classic SEIBEI designs.

so gooddd

5 years after Katrina, here is what I think:

It was incredibly stupid to build a city below sea level next to the ocean. In some ways New Orleans deserved what it got. But a lot of lives could have been saved if the government had handled things better, like maybe ordering people to evacuate and giving poor people a way to actually do so, and somewhere to go. They could have sent people to the Superdome BEFORE the storm hit, not after.

It doesn’t seem like as much progress has been made in rebuilding as there should have been by now. I feel it is a waste of time because this is going to just happen again someday; I’d like to think that next time a huge storm is going to hit the area, people would think about Katrina and prepare a little better, but the reality is probably not. They’d think there’s no way it could happen again, or the government would screw up and still fail to help people who don’t have cars to evacuate with or anywhere to evacuate to. I would much rather just rebuild the city somewhere else but people are stubborn. If they insist on rebuilding in the exact same place, at least build homes to be more hurricane proof! That’s what people do in Florida, after all.

P.S. Almost 9 years after 9/11, I’m still angry that my school didn’t tell us anything and was perfectly content to just let us go on laughing about what we believed to be a drunk pilot in a tiny airplane hitting a building and not doing much damage or killing anyone but himself.
