if you want to try to understand why I love dogs, why my first golden Luke will always be the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and why his death was the worst thing, read this book. he was the male version of Trixie.

This is from the day in 1999 when my family and I went to meet Luke, our first golden retriever, for the first time. I’m not visible, that’s my brother leaning over to pet him, but that was one of the best days of my life. Luke was the perfect dog.

I love this so much. Almost every time my mom and I talk on the phone, she’ll hold the phone so my dog Roxie (or one of our other pets if she’s not nearby, there are 10 total so it’s not hard to find at least one) can hear and I can say hello to her. Most of the other pets are cats or guinea pigs, but Roxie ALWAYS can tell it’s me. I don’t care what non animal lovers say, dogs are smart and loyal and will always love and remember you.

A large, loud truck came around frequently and took away all the bags of food people left out for us, and then meals would be scarce for a day or two. I didn’t like that truck, nor the greedy men who hopped off it to scoop up all the food for themselves, despite the fact that they and their truck smelled glorious.

Man walks dogs for 2,000 miles -- for a cause

This is the best thing ever and I am absolutely going to be there when he gets to the Boston Common. I am so glad this is ending in Boston; my dog, also named Luke, died of cancer in 2004 and he was the perfect dog.
